在这里了解她和then come back.
OK, now that 您’re back, I’d like 您 to meet someone similar to her.
They’re different people, but they’re two sides of the same coin. Whereas Jessica won’t travel because she is held back by the travel industry’s marketing, 鲍勃 is our resident travel naysayer and held back by his own cynicism.
(I’ve changed his name — both here and in his 要么 iginal comment) came to my attention when he responded to my blog post about 我如何赚钱和负担得起旅行。
我喜欢这个– “Anyone 能够 do it”… It’s all very individual. 那里 is no formula that’s why no one comes out and says. They want 您 to buy something. This site doesn’t seem that big/popular enough to generate enough money to fly 25 times/year. 我的 niece has a bigger blog than this.
Like I said, everyone wants to seem lucky. 那里’s always more to it than anyone will let on. I’ve been to 20 countries, but that’s because I’ve had rich friends/lovers & affluent parents. I once had a job that took me places, too. See? I said it. 那’s honest. No expensive books w/some 秘密. I’m not 尝试ing to sound lucky 要么 like I know something because I’m not selling anything.
I don’t know 鲍勃 personally. He’s probably a nice guy, and I’m not here to pick on him; I simply want to discuss his line of thinking because 我认为它 is shared by 远 too many. People like 鲍勃 assume that someone must first have some sort of helping hand, that saving money in 要么 der to travel 能够’t be as simple as I make it seem — and that I, and others like me, are just here to make a quick buck by selling a pipe dream!
Why 鲍勃 is a Nice Guy But Completely Wrong
Jessica will never go to Ireland — not because she doesn’t think she 能够, but because she will never 打破 out of the mold the travel industry puts her in. On the other hand, folks like 鲍勃 might travel 远 and wide but will never believe it is possible to do so without a lot of money. I call this the Sarah Palin Syndrome, which I’ve defined as:
“I’m not one of those who came from a background of, 您 know, kids who perhaps graduate college and their parents give them a passport and give them a backpack and go off and travel the world. No, I’ve worked all my life. In fact, I usually had two jobs all my life until I had kids. I was not a part of that culture.”
This is a pessimistic mentality. It is one that blames the outside world for 您r ills and then creates a “no” mentality so 您 never 尝试 找到旅行的方式。
鲍勃 assumed that I could only afford my 要么 iginal trip with the help of my parents. This goes to the heart of Sarah Palin Syndrome: the assumption that 您 need a lot of money (either through a good job 要么 helpful parents) to get going and that if 您 don’t start out with a fair amount of savings, 您 能够’t travel. In his follow up 电子邮件, 鲍勃 told me:
These are the exact 20 tips I used before I went traveling. It becomes pretty easy to save 33% of 您r salary when 您 are fully committed to 您r goal. (And, in the name of transparency, for the last 6 months I was home, I did live with my parents.)
I think folks like 鲍勃 don’t think that it’s possible to save money in such a hyper-consumption world. But it is. Because when 您 stop buying crap, 您r bank account goes WAY up. When 您 能够cel 您r subscription services, the bills they generate disappear. I lived like a pauper and made my salary work. And I have always said that I lived with my parents for the last six months before my first trip.
您 just need the right focus and money management skills.
Second, 鲍勃 assumes that 您 能够’t do this while carrying outstanding debt. I am simply going to show 您 my student loan balance, which I have been paying off ever since I left my MBA program six years ago. Take a look at how much I still owe:
旅行ing with debt is possible if 您 are smart about 您r money.
But 鲍勃’s main thrust in his argument was this: I’m selling a lie. 鲍勃 电子邮件ed me the following after he posted his comment:
嘿,马特– This is a response to 您r 关于 Me page. Why doesn’t anyone every just say how they do it? Those backpackers in Thailand told 您 how. Why 能够’t 您 just share what they shared for free? 前夕ryone wants to keep it some mystery 要么 say, “Just decide to,”普通人可以完全了解’只是离开然后离开’t know how. Do 您 just save enough for a cheap flight, then, once 您 arrive hustle, camp, hostel, look for jobs as a gardener, network? Is that it? Once the bit 您’ve saved is gone, how do 您 generate enough to continue to eat and live? No matter how cheap it is, 您 have to do something to generate money for food and hostels and trains and planes. What is it that folks do? Did I guess it right? Teach English, hustle, take odd jobs, garden, tutor? Can 您 just be 真实, honest and upfront?
In responding to my experience with those backpackers in Thailand, 鲍勃 demonstrated that he had looked around my site but clearly only saw what he wanted to see, because I’ve answered 他所有的问题 在以前的帖子中和have always been upfront about 该网站的实用性.
那里’s no 秘密 要么 book needed. All anyone has to say/do is exactly what I communicated very briefly. All 您 need is $2,000 for an initial trip and week stay to make connections. It will get cheaper from there. Once 您 take a trip, go for a teaching job 要么 hospitality, hustle, network. 的more 您 do, the more things unfold. 那’s the 秘密 to most things. Just start. Figure the rest out as 您 go.
鲍勃 I agree. 那里 is no 秘密 to travel. It’s exactly about what 您 just said. Save up some money. Just make the leap. Here are all the times I’ve made that point myself:
- Why 那里 is Never a Perfect Time to 旅行
- How to Overcome 您r 旅行 Fears
- 那里 is No Secret to Long-Term 旅行
的world is full of cynics. 的world is full of people who want to get 您 down. Anyone who has lived for more than five minutes knows that. Folks like 鲍勃 simply believe that it’s impossible to do what I do without some sort of helping hand. They sneer at the thought that travel could be easy 要么 affordable to all. pssh, 他们说, 您 must have a trust fund. 您 aren’t telling the whole truth.
鲍勃 isn’t as 远 off as others because he knows what I have long said — there is no 秘密 to travel. 您 just go do it! 您 need to make the leap. But he is wrong that in 要么 der to make that leap, 您 must be well off in advance. Hard work and dedication 能够 get 您 where 您 need to go. I worked my butt off to so I could go travel.
But cynics only see and hear what they want. I told 鲍勃 that I had loans, that the math worked out, that I wasn’t selling him an unrealistic dream, linked to all the 文章s I’ve written to share my experiences, and talked more about my past.
But I never heard back from 鲍勃
Sarah Palin Syndrome doesn’t let 您 see the truth; it only seeks to reinforce 您r beliefs. Once 鲍勃 knew my story (a story I never hide but that he didn’t take the time to learn), he went away. Cynics like to be cynics.
鲍勃 is right — there is no 秘密 to travel. 您 just need to take the leap. I’m not selling any larger dream than that. All I am doing is pushing 您 out the door and then telling 您 how to save money when 您 get outside.
那里 are bound to be 鲍勃斯 in 您r life. People will dismiss 您r goals, accomplishments, and dreams. They will 尝试 to give 您 a sense of 真实ity and tell 您 “the whole story.”
I believe people like 鲍勃 能够’t dream the impossible. Where 鲍勃 and people like him go wrong is that they believe that only those individuals who hustle 要么 have outside help 能够 go live their dream. But 您r average person? They 能够’t do it.
旅行 is possible, even with a job paying $30,000 USD per year in a major city like Boston. 的鲍勃斯 of the world will never believe that, though, because if they did, then they would have to accept that anything would be possible.
But I like the 鲍勃斯 of the world because 我可以 go out and prove them wrong. And, hopefully, 我可以 inspire many of 您 to do the same by crushing the myth that travel is expensive 要么 unattainable.
And then we 能够 all say to 鲍勃: “I know 您’re wrong. I won’t let 您 get me down. I’ll only let 您 inspire me to do better.”

我的 纽约时报 best-selling paperback guide to world travel will teach 您 how to master the art of travel so that 您’ll get off the beaten path, save money, and have a deeper travel experience. It’s 您r A to Z planning guide that the BBC guide the “预算旅行者的圣经。”

As a sidebar, I would like to say that yes, this website does bring in enough money to support my travels and fly 25 times per year! (Thank 您 to all 您 wonderfully awesome readers and community members who support this website by booking their travels through here!!!!)

If 您 are not making 您r money from ads on this site 马特 where is 您r income source coming from? e-book sales?
我可以 understand why 鲍勃 would be cynical. 前夕ryone writes their own copy online and I think a lot of travel bloggers are not 真实ly truly nomadic, but just pretending to be successful in 要么 der to sell stuff.
就像我说的’我不是旅游博客,我不’t understand how it all works, and I may sound cynical like 鲍勃 But I have been on the road for near a year, making money solely from my travel videos, so I know it 能够 be done.

疯了,我本周也受到类似评论的打击…and I haven’t even written a book yet! Thanks for being so open and for calling out the naysayers and 打破ing down their pessimist opinions. How we get there is not as important as wanting it and then purposely working towards 您r goals. Live on my brother – do 您.

Thanks 马特for another great 文章!
I’ve met many ‘Bobs’
Teach English, work in a hostel, 要么 work 您r butt off at home and SAVE. Budget WHILE traveling. 您 don’t need 5 要么 even 3 star hotels, cabs everywhere, and expensive restaurants. Couchsurf, hostel, 要么 stay with friends 您 make while traveling!
It comes down to priorities. If 您r priority is to travel, 您 will make it happen. 您 WILL save the money.
的high 您 get from travel, the experiences 您 have and friends 您 make from all over the world? 那 never wears off!
Totally agree..What 您 said is true for anything in life.. When 您r mind is set on some goal, 您 just take the leap and chase 您r goal. Nothing is impossible. I racked up $6000 of credit card debt while taking my first trip (and buying a DSLR before that) All cynics told me it was stupid! Why go into debt to travel! I said I wanted to, time is more previous that money. I applied for a 0% APR card to put the debt on. 我的 pre-tax salary was $19000. Yet I paid off my debt in 1 year.
自从回到国外生活了2年,然后背包旅行了8个月之后,我’我已经敏锐地意识到“you’re so lucky 您 got to do that” and “this is the only time in 您r life 您’能够做这样的事情”评论。人们不’t understand how easy it is to get out and travel and live those dreams. 的greatest hurdle for anyone is making the decision to go and do it. Once 您’ve set 您r mind to it, 您’ll do whatever 您 need to do to make it happen. 它’s a constant learning process and we figure it out as we go. But believing 您 能够 do it is the biggest challenge for most people, and 您 (and the travel blogging community) are here to show it’完全有可能。
Kiersten
Nicely written Matt! Since starting my own blog there have been countless 鲍勃斯 in my life. I know first hand how inexpensive travel 能够 be and 您’re totally right. So suck it 鲍勃! Followed by a hug for 鲍勃 because he makes the journey so much sweeter 😉

This is a great post. I commented on the Jessica post too about how I felt that Jessica was possibly not 尝试ing to travel because of a lack of desire, etc. I appreciate how 您 responded to my question back then, clarifying that the travel industry pigeon-holes people, and to the issue of 鲍勃 Thx for this one.

Well said Matt. It 真实ly comes down to how much 您r willing to sacrifice to make 您r dreams happen. We saved for 2 1/2 years before our trip and paid off bills for another year after and it was the best decision we could have made. It tough to say no to going out to dinner with friends. Or saying no to buying coffee at a coffee shop. Or not buying new clothes. Or not going out to see movies. Or not buying a beer at the pub. Or one of the million things we all waste our money on. But if each time 您 think “I’我不会花15美元在这部破烂的好莱坞电影上,因为这在泰国住了1晚” it makes it easier.
If 您 want to make 您r dreams a 真实ity, 您 have to put the effort in. It’s not easy, it may get side tracked, but if 您 keep focused on it long enough it’ll happen if 您 believe 您 能够 do it. But if 您 think 您’ll fail, 您 always will. We have the ability in the west to create our own 真实ity.

“Because when 您 stop buying crap, 您r bank account goes WAY up. I lived like a pauper and made my salary work” –这两行是任何人都能负担得起的旅行所需的知识。
“然后我们发现他能够在第一次旅行之前节省20,000美元” – I love how he seems surprised that the big 秘密 to this long term travel malarky is saving up for it in advance of setting off.
我认为像鲍勃(Bob)这样的人与世隔绝的是博客作者’t每天发布关于他们做出的储蓄决定(6月19日:我没有’t buy that new sweater I liked, 20 June: I moved in with my parents to save on rent etc) and because they feel so stuck in their own financial situation 和can’t see a way to alter their own finances (despite posts detailing this) they assume 您 have to be pulling one over on them.
Sounds like 鲍勃 would feel better if 您 complained about how tough it was to 缩减 on spending in 要么 der to afford 您r first trip. He could believe it then. Except 您 were probably happy to make all those 缩减s because the promise of travel was worth it.
的秘密 “Bob” is looking for is this: Decide on the life 您 want, and then become the person who lives that life. Most people don’t even get as 远 as figuring out the first part. Of those who do, only a handful have the stomach for the second. Living 您r dream life almost always requires major sacrifices, and that is the 秘密 nobody ever wants to hear.
(Ava Apollo)
的fear is by 远 the hardest thing to get over. It’s just a weird, unnamed fear with no rationality behind it (or maybe too much rationality?) Glad 鲍勃 finally saw the light.
Who cares?! 那里 will always be an excuse.

那里 is always an excuse!

AWE-SOME 文章, Matt.
他将自己的情况归咎于他人,并告诉自己,“It’s the way it is.”
People actually have way more personal power to exert a lot more control over their lives than many will admit (to themselves.) 马特 您’ve succeeded by exerting a lot of positive will in 您r circumstances towards building the wonderful life 您 have. 您 are an example for all. Thank 您 for generously sharing 您r hard-won wisdom with the world.
This site has given me many hours of inspiration, enjoyment and dreams for further travel. Thank 您.
旅行 on, Matt. Godspeed.

“I CAN TRAVEL”。
Kim, 您 能够 do it! = ) 您 will be so excited when 您 are debt free. It will come faster than 您 think. 我的 husband and I dug ourselves out of debt in the early years of our marriage and we have been debt-free for nearly 15 years.
您r travels will be that much more meaningful to 您 as a result of achieving this honorable goal.

Awww thanks
If 您 are truly passionate and committed then follow 您r dream, as no one else 能够. More people talk and don’跟随他们,因为他们相信自己可以’t do. Fear holds some back with strong negative outside influences (like the 鲍勃斯). This goes for traveling 要么 whatever. If 您 want it bad enough there’s nothing wrong with a little sacrifice along the path to 您r desires. A choice 能够 be made at any age to please 您rself first.
I’m 58 and have been traveling in the US for 35+ years on a seasonal income, as a Park Ranger for the last 20, and with student loans larger and older than 您rs. Two years ago I finally followed my dream stepping off this continent to South 非洲 and without extravagance afforded a month of adventure. Currently planning winter 2014 in Costa Rica, and maybe beyond.

我的 theory: 您 didn’t hear back from “Bob,” because once he found it was possible to save money and travel as 您 described, he had to 您-know-what 要么 get off the pot, and he decided he preferred to remain sitting. Can’t speak to the college loan issue but the biggest way for most adults to save money is not have kids. Most people will not make that choice. Fine. I respect their decision. But I feel they should have equal respect for my decision. As the man said, 您 能够 have anything but 您 能够’t have everything.

丈夫’s in school and I’m偿还了16K的学生贷款

Another note, 30k a year is heaps of money! If 您 are making 30k a year 您 have NO excuse. 您 能够 save money, sell stuff and be out the door in 6 months.
To 鲍勃 – Get a working holiday visa in 澳大利亚 and fly there. Then, WHEN 您 run out of money, 您 能够 find an even better paying job there.
您 能够 do it 鲍勃 Stop being a bitch.

(Drew Meyers)
那’s my choice.
It all depends on what 您 value. People need to decide what they truly value, and then spend their money on that. I still have a 227lb, 36″我几年前免费获得的CRT电视。

它’s interesting to see how 您 all made travel 您r own priority and made the math work for 您!

我的答案一直都是一样的– just take step one and that will lead 您 to step two. But, most people like making excuses for why they
REALLY want!

Thank 您 马特for a 真实ly great, thought-provoking post. I know that I have been stuck in the rut of “I 能够’直到我的学生贷款还清为止” mentality but sadly in my state of loan-ness, it is true: I have to begin paying them down first. But once the routine is established, exactly what 您 said: Make said arrangements; sell off crap; book flight; go.

I managed to go on holiday for 2 weeks for 40 euros, so even if 您 did have loads of money when 您 first went out travelling, just to restate everyone else, it doesn’t mean that it wasn’t possible to have gone and done it anyway with less. Things happen when 您 leave the house, that just be the rule of the road.

它’s all about making that conscious lifestyle choice, as 您 say–not only before a big RTW trip but also when 您 get home and decide 您 want to keep that lifestyle (or a variation of it) for good.

I’m not aspiring to build a career on travel, but in teaching (so my blog about life abroad sounds a little bit too much like 真实 life sometimes). So my opinion in this matter is quite different. For people who doubt what 马特is doing, yes, 您’re right. Stay home. Marry 您r high school sweetheart, make 您r car payments, and have a nice life. For people who believe in what 马特is doing, save and get a little bit of scratch together for a plane ticket. It’s not hard, 真实ly. Of course if 您 just want to travel so 您 能够 act like an idiot in other people’的国家/地区,请留在家里。当然可以’s something good in TV that 您 need to watch. I had a friend recently tell me that she figured it was going to cost us FORTY THOUSAND DOLLARS for a 3 week trip we have planned to 欧洲. Needless to say that is FAR in excess of our actual budget and we travel with our 您ng kids and not as the paupers we once did. People tend to WAY overestimate how much it costs to travel and way underestimate the financial costs in staying home (power, food, gas, entertainment). And yes it’的确很多人可以’没想到“cut back”虽然他们的房屋里装满了物品,但这个世界上大多数人都可以’t even dream of. It’s all a matter of how badly 您 want to do it.

的strange thing about the 鲍勃 fella is he’回答了他自己的问题。
我不会’由于在大多数国家/地区求职,我称自己是最有创业精神的人’ve been too, rather than raise my own money. But the ability to adapt to the situation has got me this 远. 那里 isn’t any 秘密. Matt’s books aren’t 秘密s either, they just condense the information already available in a package.

Thank 您 for taking the time to formulate such a detailed response to 鲍勃’s cynicism. I don’t usually take the time to add comments on posts but had to do it on this one because 您r website (along with Chris Guillebeau’s)是我为什么 ’m currently trekking through 欧洲. Something I always wanted to do but never thought I could. 我的 friend and I have gone almost homeless just to meet someone who was mysteriously going to London for five days and offerering us his swanky apartment to stay in FOR FREE. 旅行ing is scary, meeting new people is scary but once 您 take the leap, trust 您r instincts, stick to 您r morals, 您 will be okay. Worst comes to worst, 您r hustle side will surface if 您’真的很深。

好吧,我猜’s because of people’对旅行的期望。 这些人’s idea of traveling is being somewhere unfamiliar with all the familiar comforts that they are used to. Of course, these are available practically everywhere but 您 need to cough up the cash and if this is their mentality then for sure they will be cynical about doing it el cheapo!

马特 我可以not contribute to the discussion since I started traveling when I was forty and had the money and lack of responsibilities to go where I list. 我的 only problem with what 您 have written is that in a world made unpleasant by gratuitous snarkerie 您 are indulging in what strikes as gratuitous snarkerie in naming 鲍勃’s distemper for the former Governor of Alaska, who after all did not say that all 您ng people who wandered the world were overprivileged layabouts, only that some were —这一定是真的— 和that she was not one of them.

但是让’别忘了这没有’t apply to people of all backgrounds, 要么 to be more specific, to people from parts of the world where the average GDP per capita is a lot lower (but I 真实ize 您 were mainly directing this at 美国ns). People with low 要么 even average paying jobs from my part of the world (Eastern 欧洲, Hungary in my case) couldn’t do this – that’s why I’我会尽我所能,摆脱困境,尽快在西欧上班’跟我师傅做完了’s(距离现在2年)。
511’ll just write $500):
So while I agree with what 您’re saying, I don’t see anyone from around here being able to just up and do it. (This is also the reason 您 view Budapest as a cheap destination but for Hungarians it’s about as expensive as it gets 🙂 still if 您 find all the right places it 能够 be a pretty budget place for us as well.)

那里 are hardly ever passing more than 3 months without traveling. So travel IS possible. It all depends on which sh*thole 您 are willing to live in and what crappy wine 您 are willing to drink (yes, I do go out every week).

Oh also to underscore the ridiculousness of our situation compared to Western 欧洲, I just recently came home from a semester I spent in France on Erasmus (which means 您 also get a stipendum from the 欧洲an Union that covers a large chunk of 您r expenses if 您’很幸运),在回家之前,我在巴黎迪斯尼乐园做了为期2周的工作,赚了几乎和我妈妈差不多的钱…3个月。
我刚刚创建了一个“Travel” folder in my browser and 您r blog is the first one I bookmarked and added to it. Found it through Benny’自从我以某种方式(fluentin3months)写博客’我也是一个语言迷。

I totally agree with 您 Matt! I did my first 5 month solo backpacking trip of 欧洲 back in 2009. I had a part time job and was on benefits for a small period of time. I made some smart decisions like:
Just like 您, I funded a 5 month trip in about 8 months.

I am glad that on reading 您r advice that I followed most of it without knowing it. But I think 您’ve missed one key rule out. If 您 plan to stay and live in a country a while, and 您 travel with money, get a job and don’花它。 唐’t get me wrong, I had an awesome time (of what I remember) though it perhaps inhibited me in what I eventually saw in my 2 years there (I missed Darwin so never got to wrestle a crocodile- gutted). When I first read 您r post about saving $20,000 in three years, I was a bit surprised. I thought 您 were maybe even low-balling 您rself to seem more believable. I think the main reason people don’save钱是因为他们在经济学和数学上很烂,旅行是’在他们的优先级列表上高。
哇马特… big no no… how dare 您 尝试 to sell tips on blogging and travel… what makes YOU such an authority. Oh yeah, 您 traveled non-stop for 8 years and have the top travel blog in the world.
I’我不是在这里亲吻马特’s 您 know what. 我的 point is that people spend so much money on travel books (like the lonely planet), and self help books and never consider calling those people a cheat. Here we have a blog run for so many years as a resume (which is more than 我可以 say for Lonely planet writers, if 您 have followed their controversy), he has the right to sell his knowledge, like any book author, if he so pleases.

住所 alone 能够not be found for less than £200 a month all inclusive, and that is if 您 are living in a student house-share 要么 something similar. If I wanted to rent a studio flat, due to the other costs incurred such as council tax, water rates, energy –我可能希望每月最便宜的价格是400英镑(’非常乐观)。
Of course, all of this depends on an un-skilled, 您ng man to have a job at all, let alone one which offers the luxury of full-time hours.
How would 您 advise the truly working class people of the UK, and from 您r own country, to travel for meaningful amounts of time –考虑到在世界的某些地区,尤其是在欧元区,在我的情况下,是否存在返回家乡找不到工作的巨大风险?
Please also take in mind that my example is from England. What about Greece, and Spain, where 您th unemployment is running as high as 50% 要么 more??

I think I know a 鲍勃 my Dad.
Moment, i guess.
Reading this 文章 about 鲍勃 hits me to the bone. Maybe I was a 鲍勃 too. Thinking that there’s no way i 能够 travel. This thought had been shared with my husband too. 您 change my mind, Matt.

Like everybody else I met a lot of people doing the same and 您 能够 always look at it from to sites: 的guy that left Germany to take a managing position in China – Of course he was lucky with this offer but he had to manage to move with his wife and two schoolkids.

马特– thank 您 so much for the time and energy 您 put into 您r blog posts. I\’ve only recently discovered 您, but I plan to follow 您 everywhere now :).
I am both a teacher and a student, and it felt more comfortable (for me) to begin my travels with a job teaching abroad. I actually love work and school, so I may 要么 may not continue both as time unfolds. For me. it was an enormous paradigm shift to 真实ize 我可以 do both from wherever I want to be given proper planning.

I know 您 wrote this four years ago, but the truth 您 present behind the idea hits home.
I appreciate 您r honesty and 您r patience toward all the 鲍勃斯 and Jessicas. 我的 husband and I have been lucky that as we make plans to sell all our things and go on a long hike we have received a lot of support, but when we talk about getting back and living in an RV people’利益平淡而玩世不恭。
Regardless, it is a life that works for us and we MOST DEFINITELY 能够 and will make it happen. Thank 您 for 您r support for all of us who see living differently and, because of that, pursue the life even the haters 能够’t ignore.
