It’s not that hard.
我所有的担心和恐惧都化为乌有 — this traveling thing is a lot easier than 您 would believe. It’s not like 您 are the first person to ever do this.
您 learn a lot of good skills.
它 has helped me figure out situations even when 我可以’t understand them. It has made me more independent, more open, and, overall, just a better person.
您 make a lot of friends.
It may seem scary just throwing 您rself out there and talking to strangers, but we are all strangers in a strange land. It took me a while to get used to just saying “hello” to strangers, but now it seems like second nature. 前夕ryone is so friendly and welcoming on the road that even when 您 travel solo, 您 are never 真实ly alone.
您 meet some of 您r closest friends traveling.
And even though 您 may not see them for years, 您 still end up at their wedding, 克里斯tmas dinner, 要么 family celebration. Distance and time cannot break the bond 您 formed.
But chase the ones 您 like.
Yet once in a while, 您’ll find someone 您 真实ly connect with. 唐’t force 您rself to say another good-bye if 您 不要’不必。
一世’ve learned that the more 您 know and the more 您 尝试新事物,生活更有趣。
而且,虽然我赢了’t do either of those last two things again, I 不要’t regret 走出我的舒适区 and trying new things. 前夕n if 您 only try things once, it’s good to challenge 您rself and be adventurous. Scare 您rself once in a while. It makes life less dull.
的re is no such thing as a mistake.
When 您 顺其自然 and let the road just unfold ahead of 您, there’s no reason to have regrets 要么 think 您 made a mistake. 您 make the best decisions 您 can and, in the end, the journey is the adventure.
唐’t be cheap.
When 您 travel on a budget and need to make 您r money last,’很容易便宜。 Being cheap only fills 您 with regret.
That being said, 不要’t be wasteful.
But remember 您 aren’t made of money, so 不要’t always feel like 您 need to party with 您r new friends every night 要么 do every activity in a new place. Sometimes it’s OK just to sit around and relax 要么 cook 您r own meal. Be frugal, but not cheap.
Sometimes it is great to have a plan. When there is limited time, 您 want to try to see as much as possible and stay on track. But stop being hemmed in by that plan. Traveling is about opening 您rself up to change and letting life take 您 where 您 want to go. In the end, 您 throw the plan away anyway, so 为什么还要麻烦一个人? Have a rough idea of what 您 want to do, and just fill in the details along the way.
它’s just extra weight in 您r bag. Just ask people for tips and information.
Travel is all about change. 的 more 您 say “tomorrow,” the less likely it is that tomorrow will ever come. Traveling has shown me aspects of my personality I wish I didn’还给我看了我’m 真实ly lazy. I’我总是宣誓就职“Carpe Diem” but sometimes I 不要’t 真实ly do it.
Life is amazing. 的re’s no reason to worry. 的 universe unfolds as it should. 放松 and just go with it.
带来一些好处 不懂当地语言 — like miming out “chicken” to let the lady know 您 want eggs for breakfast — but 学习语言很有趣, very helpful when 您 travel, and works out great when 您 meet other travelers. Not only can 您 eavesdrop on their conversations, but there’也不会像通过讲他们的语言使人们感到惊讶。
Seriously. Science has proven it helps, and with all that beach time 您 do when 您 travel, 您 could always use a little more. Being tan is great. Having skin cancer is not. SPF up!
它’s taught me that the old saying is true: 您 can always depend on the kindness of strangers. 我的 friend Greg taught me long ago not to be guarded against strangers.
How to Travel the 世界 on $50 a Day
我的 纽约时报 best-selling paperback guide to world travel will teach 您 how to master the art of travel so that 您’ll get off the beaten path, save money, and have a deeper travel experience. It’s 您r A to Z planning guide that the BBC guide the “预算旅行者的圣经。”

Book 您r Flight
的y are my two favorite search engines because they search websites and airlines around the globe so 您 always know no stone is left unturned.
Book 您r 住所
您 can book 您r hostel with 旅馆世界. If 您 want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com 因为他们一贯返回旅馆和廉价酒店的最低价。
Travel insurance will protect 您 against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. 一世’ve been using 世界 Nomads 十年。
Need to book 您r trip?
看看我的 资源页面 for the best companies to use when 您 travel. I list all the ones I use when I travel. 的 are the best in class and 您 can’t go wrong using them on 您r trip.

One important lesson 您 should let us in on is, how on earth do 您 afford to travel for 5 years?
的 first year was from savings, years 2-3 were funded by teaching english overseas, and the last two years have been from this blog.
谢谢 for 您r honesty 马特 🙂 Its interesting to see the progression 您 went through.

您r blog is such an amazing, informative and inspiring one. I 真实ly want to start to travel this year, planning to go first trip to Hongkong. I am thinking to travel alone however i 真实ly am sort of scared, that is why i am looking for a travel partner.
(Marina K. Villatoro)
People are 真实ly good! 您 forget that when 您 sit at home watching too much tv and horrible newscasts.
Traveling the world, in my opinion is the only way to 真实ly learn about the world around 您, try new stuff and meet people 您 would never hang out with in 您r hometown!

的re is a great quote about how the more we travel, the more we learn we 不要’对世界一无所知。

Heyah
这是一个简单的手势,但我永远不会忘记…Matt, that’s why I travel…
Congrats on 5 years, 马特! I love that 您’re still wearing the same backpack. This is an inspiring post and I hope everyone reads it. 的re is no greater education than travel –通过旅行的经历,我们了解了其他人,但是对自己的了解却更多。

Good stuff,

我认为对于任何人来说,第一点是最重要的’s hesitant to travel, even on a shorter term. I hope there are many more happy and 安全 travels for 您.

REI equipment is built to last. 的 bag looks as good as it did on the first day. Well, almost as good.
Many 安全 travels to 您 too!

Great lessons and ones that rang true for me and traveling too. I 真实ly like meeting new people and creating friendships with people all over the world- I’我因旅行遇到了很多很棒的人,对此我感到非常感谢!

Fantastic post 马特! 您 pretty much plucked everything out of my brain…and everybody else’s I’d说。 一世’ve总是说左右左右,而不是将头埋入指南中…you’ll see and experience way more. Well 不要e!
Awesome milestone
Keep it up 马特 – I know what the future holds will be just as exciting as what 您’在过去的5年中经历了!
Ahh the women. Woman have changed my plans many, many times. But sometimes, how can 您 say no!?

马特, this post made me think about how I’仅仅一个月就在路上了’很容易陷入旧习惯,在旅途中重拾我的全天候生活。

我最喜欢的行是:“sometimes 您 only get one chance and when it is gone, 您’重新充满了遗憾。”

Well 不要e on 5 years, sir!
我可以’t help but notice that a lot of 您r lesson are people (or person)-centric. It’s incredibly fascinating what 您 can learn on the road from others and what these strangers indirectly teach 您 about 您rself.

Relationships come and go VS Chase the ones 您 like
唐’t be cheap VS 唐’t Be Wasteful.
What would 您 say are some key things that 您 would NOT have learned had 您 not traveled?

I loved this post! 这里 are my top three faves.
#1 “It’s not that hard.”
#8 “Be adventurous.”

Wow, 您 have amazing advices! I am 真实ly looking foward to travel like that! it’读某人真是太好了’s experiences.
马特
马特, congrats on 您r lifestyle choice…我20岁旅行了大约5年’s too…but I do wonder after so many years of travel 您 不要’似乎去过很多地方,我也不得不说,您的许多目的地都很漂亮“safe”, well tred places.
No desire to go to Pakistan and Iran is on my list but the visa process is pretty long and I 不要’t have the time to go to it since I 不要’t stay in one place long enough. I 不要’t make condescending comments the choices 您 pick, please 不要’这样做是为了我的。
A higher probability of getting shot? 并不是很酷…it’关于去避风港的国家’还没有被旅游业彻底改变’不只是像在家一样’s a bit warmer…where it’s a bit challenging.
And 马特, obviously I hit a nerve with what I said…surprising it wasn’意味着屈尊…you have 5 years plus of solid travel but 不要’没有时间整理伊朗签证?
Anyway, 马特, if 您 are going to make out like 您 are some sort of celebrity traveler, like 您 have 不要e something incredible when in 真实ity all 您 have 不要e is spent several years hanging out in back packer hostels and visiting the easiest travel destinations in the world over and over again, well…
的re will always be people who look down on others for being “less authentic”旅行者根据他们前往的目的地,就好像您只能说要去伊朗或穿越乌兹别克斯坦来证明自己是真正的旅行者一样。 的y are 不要e for me. And me alone. I pick my destinations based on where I want to go and what I want to see.
I bet 您 have even thought about a movie being made about 您r life huh? hehe. If 您 are going to make such a 大惊小怪 about 您rself, then I think 您 should do something worthy of that 大惊小怪. 的re are literally thousands of people out there right now, many a lot 您nger than 您…
Well, I 不要’t do my travels for 您. I do them for me. I 不要’t make a “fuss” about myself. I just blog and people seem to enjoy reading it.
你可以暗示我’m so womanizing drunk. 您 can think 您 are the best traveler out there but 不要’t judge people.
背包客之一是“I’m better than 您” 游客。 的 one that looks down on others for where they go and what they do. That is 您. 您 may think my travels aren’t special but they are special to me. 的y make the difference in my life. Shouldn’t that be enough?
PS- I like discussion, which is why 您r comments are still around.
马特
好吧’s good 您 like discussion. See the problem I see 马特 is that 您 are publishing travel guides, 文章s, videos, and then get upset if anyone provides any criticism.
For example, 您 criticise gap year travelers destination choices for not going off the beaten path…which 您 seem to think is Western 澳大利亚..
你声称“the truth is” that it’很难在国外见到外国人并看到他们的家庭生活。您似乎做出了这些空白声明,这些声明显然基于您没有’t yet gotten off the beaten track 您rself.
去看看那些可以避风港的国家’t yet been utterly changed by mass tourism and globalisation. 的se places are disappearing fast, and within a generation, there will be very few places if any left…
反正我’ll leave 您 to 您r blogs…good luck!
“It’关于去避风港的国家’还没有被旅游业彻底改变’不只是像在家一样’s a bit warmer…where it’s a bit challenging.”
I 不要’t know who this other 马特 guy is making these comments, but if 您’re reading this blog then 您 must find it compelling in one way 要么 another. 您’re right in saying that everyone is entitled to an opinion and constructive criticism shouldn’t be rejected.
However, the thing is, there’s thousands of people embark on their first trips abroad every month, every year. While the banana pancake trail etc may seem ‘boring’ to 您, it is still very exciting for others.
“And yes, there is more authentic travel, and then there is 安全, boring, gap year circuit travel. “
No, boring is sitting in an office answering a phone 40 hours a week in between reading blogs of other travellers doing what 您 wish 您 were doing; it doesn’t matter if it’s 泰国 要么 Timbuktu it’s going to be exciting.
“您似乎喜欢分发很多建议…takes some advice from someone that has traveled a lot longer than 您….
For a man of the world, 您r arrogance is shocking. 您 look down on people who have traveled less than 您, as if their experiences weren’t worthy simply because they haven’t traveled to places that 您 deem to be exciting.
您’ve said 您 traveled for a number of years back in 您r 20s. Perhaps I’m wrong but from 您r posts I’m guessing that was quite a few years ago. Traveling probably wasn’t the booming industry it is now and blogging was unheard of. 的refore the notion of internet entrepreneurs probably seemed mad.
See, years ago it was a lot easier to “Go and see the countries whilst 您 can that haven’t yet been utterly changed by mass tourism and globalisation. 的se places are disappearing fast, and within a generation, there will be very few places if any left…”
的y’re popular because they are exciting places to go. 的y have been for years and therefore newbies on the trail value the experiences and opinions of the “boring travelers” who have already been there.
您 might not but unless Nomadic 马特 has created 30,000 fake 推特 accounts, it certainly seems like there are a few people out there who do.
As someone who has traveled more than NM, 您r experiences and stories would probably be worth reading about too, yet 您 come across as someone with a chip on their shoulder, a tad jealous perhaps that 您r own adventures didn’t get the recognition they could have 不要e through the wonders of the web?
“I bet 您 have even thought about a movie being made about 您r life huh? Hehe.”
I think any travel blogger would agree, actually scratch that; simply any traveler would agree. I 不要’t think anybody has ever set out to travel because they want to impress someone else.

也许这是一个观念,许多去另一代人旅行的老年人可以’因为它不是’t an avenue open to them at the time. 马特 certainly sounds like a very unhappy bunny in his current life and perhaps his jealousy is born out of the fact that he wishes he was still travelling? 🙂
Try not to get bitter in 您r old age sir… it isn’t endearing 您 to anyone 🙂

Thank 您, this is beautiful 马特. Great lessons and I agree with all of them. Travel is about saying YES to life. (I’ve been reading 您r site non-stop for the last couple of hours, lol)

“other 马特”really gets into my nerve.Well,If 您 re reading this comment, my say is, “Maybe, 您 should write 您r own blog to share 您r wonderful experience”
Haha! When i was in Manila it suprises them that i can speak Tagalog. Well, i am half(Malaysian-Phillipine). I am not tagalog even but undertsand the language. 的y speaks in Tagalog with me so i replied.
对于克里斯…welcome to 亚洲 and enjoy 您r Round 的 世界 compelling trip.
And Nomadic 马特…I think 您 should travel more and write more blogs…

A 5-year long travel plan must be an 奇妙的旅程. 谢谢 to SU that it drove me to 您r travel blog. I like it, and, I 不要’t know what to say 真实ly. 的 photos are great. And I particularly appreciate 您r positive mindset. 您 must have faced occasional challenges. But 您r summary does not give much stress on that.

她’我对其中的很多部分感到紧张,我认为也对此感到紧张“letting me down” if the plane and her 不要’t agree.

5 years is a feat in itself, I congratulate 您! 我的 biggest worry is being on the road for 5 years, how not to get sick 要么 tired of it all. 的 idea of traveling is wonderful but the 真实ity of living out of a bag for 60 months is a 真实ity and the novelty does wear off.
What do 您 do when 您 reach that limit where 您 just can’不能再去看一间教堂,还是在另一间旅馆里睡觉,或者再见一人?

Great lessons learned 马特. One other important thing 您’ve learned is how to make money while 您 travel. 的 rest of us just spend money when we travel.

I’m sure 您 hear this constantly but 您 are an inspiration! I just got back from a month in 泰国, Laos, 越南 and Cambodia. 的 longest stint I ever traveled was for 4 months and then I got “settled”生活,婚姻,拥有房屋,四只狗等…
Many of 您 on this board are still in 您r 20’且相对不受责任限制,我对此职位感到羡慕。
反正我’ll continue to follow 您r blog as it will keep me focused on the carrot. 谢谢 for putting 您r stories out there.

Very inspiring post! I love that 您 make a distinction between being frugal and being cheap. I also thought it was cool to hear the things that 您 didn’t expect to learn along the way (namely what 您’ve learned about 您rself). Keep Carpe Deiming, my friend!

它的名字叫Hospitalityclub.org,它是免费的,但要花一两个月才能被志愿者接受。
的 other 要么ganization I belong to is more difficult to join. I am also a Jehovah’见证人,我们是一个世界大家庭。 JW’s company and they are a very reliable source of local information and contacts. In Jordan the witnesses insisted on picking us up at the hotel and after the Sunday meeting took us out and we had a barbeque with the local group and some amazing stories of life in the middle east.
的re are some dangers to traveling. I have been robbed of all my belongings in 的 Ukraine yet they are some of the most generous people I have ever met. Many would share their last meal with a stranger. Please enjoy 您r travels but always exercise caution even with other travelers.
I only offer an experienced opinion. That is all. As a landscaper for 30 years I offer an experienced opinion with those that want help in landscaping. 的 same with travel.
的 city we liked the best is St. Petersburgh in Russia. It helped that my wife speaks Russian. Any anyone that goes to Budapest please 不要t forget to see the Labryinthe under the Castle which has the fountain of red wine. 我的 goal is to go to Montenegro &克罗地亚的一天。

的se are amazing thoughts.

This is a great post and 我可以 see that 您 are 真实ly dedicated to reading each of these comments! I myself am taking a year off after graduating from college and am currently teaching in China.

I’m 17 and graduating this year. I have put much consideration into college because I do want to have a career and make good money someday. But I always come back to traveling. I just want to get out and be free. I 不要’t feel like I’m “running away”从任何东西。

Wonderful 文章 that makes very good common sense 马特, 谢谢. I totally agree that 99.9999% of the people we meet abroad are friends to be made and not to be hesitant about. 的y are also looking for us to share some of our experiences with them. I live in NYC and the statement that rings most true is that to many people never stop take some time from their lives to enjoy more than their existence of going to , then return home, and back to work the next day. Until its too late when one’的健康状况不允许。
